Trouble is My Business: Detective Fiction and its Historical Contexts In-Person
Coming into mainstream popularity during the Victorian Period, the figure of the detective has taken on and responded to the different historical contexts around it. From unparallelled intellects of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot to the cynical and hardboiled Phillip Marlowe and Mike Hammer, the idea of what makes the hero or antihero tick in these genres reveals a lot of about the values and expressions of culture in the moments they were produced. This exhibit seeks to make the detectives themselves the clues to revealing and uncovering more about what shaped the stories we told in the past and the ones we cling to today.
