“Death and the Price of Lemons:” The Great Influenza of 1918 in Caddo Parish

“Death and the Price of Lemons:” The Great Influenza of 1918 in Caddo Parish Online

In a recent interview on public radio’s “Fresh Air”, Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a medical doctor and sociologist, observed that denial and lies are an intrinsic part of an epidemic.  “Everywhere you see the spread of germs for the last few thousand years,” he pointed out, “you see right behind it the spread of lies. And partly, that's because the person on the street wants to deny what's happening. And partly, it's because our political leaders don't want to take it seriously either.”  The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 has run true to form in that regard and prompted a look back on past pandemics and how people in northwest Louisiana reacted to them.
